Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Natalie M — 02 Jul 2012
Ever since I was a kid I was puzzled by the euphoria surrounding Goldfinger and even today I'm not entirely sure why it's widely considered the quintessential Bond flick and the pinnacle of the franchise.
Oh, don't get me wrong, it's a fine film containing many of the series' most iconic and memorable characters, gadgets and moments, but out of the original three Bond flicks (the first two being Dr.
No and From Russia With Love), I actually like this the least. It's a terrific film overall with great characters (especially the villains), memorable set-pieces (the laser) and fantastic gadgets (the DB5), but I didn't find the story particularly exciting, the ending is horribly rushed and I was disappointed by the waste of the promising Masterson Sisters sub-plot.
I really liked the idea of Tilly showing up wanting revenge for the death of her sister, but in the end it goes nowhere. You could remove her from the film entirely and it wouldn't change a damn thing.
Perhaps they should have combined her character with Pussy Galore's somehow. That would have made things interesting.
