Review of Goldfinger (1964) by Rob Ó — 17 Oct 2012
The quintessential Sean Connery James Bond film.
The picture is nonetheless a TRIFLE over-rated, with style standing triumphant over any kind of substance. The first two acts are stunningly iconic and set up the world of James Bond in 40-odd minutes arguably moreso than the previous two films did over the space of their collective four hours. Combined with the excellent cast (although Cec Linder as Felix Leiter is a poor substitute for cool-as-ice Jack Lord), the bold, sexy John Barry score and Sean Connery at his most effortlessly cool, it's easy to forgive the film's fairly underwhelming third act.
While it sacrifices the cold-blooded cloak-and-dagger atmosphere of the first two films for style and straight-forward adventure, it is nonetheless the 007 film that I would show to aliens who had never heard of James Bond before.
