Review of GoldenEye (1995) by Russell G — 25 Aug 2012
This is a one of the best 007 movies of all time and is definitely Pierce Brosnan's best. It does follow the bond movie template dogmatically with a sultry themes song, a high stakes villain, a deadly beauty, a vulnerable damsel that proves to be quite helpful, top of the line gadgets, a sleek car, and the classic cool charm and swagger of Bond.
It is the Bond formula to the bone and that how I like my 007 movies. Even though we have seen these things from the series before it introduces a new James Bond, reinvigorated the series, spawned a massively successful video game, and introduced a whole new generation (my generation) to the 007 franchise and all of its traditions.
Pierce Brosnan is an excellent pick to carry the torch of the James Bond legacy. He looks the part, is capable of being rough and tough yet has the cool composure, the sly sense of humor, and genre likability that a good Bond should.
The story twist of the villains and their plot are unusually good for a movie of this series, Sean Bean and the lovely Famke Jansen adds a lot. It is my personal favorite of the franchise and I will always have a lot of love for it because it introduced me to the Bond movies I love so much.
