Review of Going to Pieces: The Rise and Fall of the Slasher Film (2006) by Emma R — 19 Jan 2008
It was really interesting to hear the experts' theories on what makes good horror and why people want to want to watch it in the first place etc. Also really cool to see how some of the effects are done (e.g. head that's going to be severed is actually just being held in place by toothpicks!). Really good selection of clips from quite a wide range of films and, overall, the documentary holds your attention really well.
Oh, and learning that Tom Savini was a photographer in Vietnam explains so much! He was definitely one of the highlights in the documentary.
In response to the person below, Texas Chainsaw Massacre WAS at least mentioned - or, rather, Leatherface was - but only very, very briefly.
