Review of Going in Style (1979) by John C — 23 Mar 2009
Interesting that this film was billed as almost a wacky comedy when it's a bittersweet film about aging, friendship, and death. Burns give a natural performance and is equal to the legendary Strasberg. Carney is delightful.
True this movie is slow by today's standards. The director Brest allows the camera to move almost as slowly as the characters. And the robbery is over by the the first 40 minutes. But the film really isn't a caper film, but a movie about not having any purpose in life.
I saw this as a teenager and again as I approach 50. It the story seems even more becomes even more powerful.
