Review of Godzilla vs. Megaguirus (2000) by Joe A — 10 Jan 2010
A step in the right direction after the awful Godzilla 2000, the Big G returns to basics battling a giant bug from another dimension. A lot more fun then that last one, there is some cool stuff here and some decent SPFX too.
Director Tezuka moves things along fairly well and while not a strongly stylish director, he does a good job putting together a pretty good monster movie. The weakest part of the story is the Megaguirus itself.
The full grown queen is not nearly on screen long enough to build a strong character and the FX portraying it are the weakest. The battle is pretty much by the numbers and once Godzilla gets the speedy bugger to stand still it's easily defeated.
To pose a real threat it should have been much larger. It was actually more fun when Godzilla battled a swarm of smaller ones earlier on. There is some goofy stuff, as usual, but, all in all, it's entertaining if you like this stuff.
