Review of Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974) by Danop D — 24 Jul 2007
Somehow this movie was my first time at the theatre.
The version I watched was in Japanese and I am sure King Sesar was not in it.
It was inspiring and it kept me Godzilla (and monster movie) crazy until I turned 25 or so. There's something strangely attractive about how these rubber suit monster movies are filmed, possibly the miniature set on a raised soundstage and against a large painted sky cyclo and not quite enough depth of field. It's a lot more three dimensional than mattes. It doesn't speak realism, but it makes you want to buy the action figures and reenact the movie scenes. Somehow the perspective you can get with your eyes and the action figures matches what you saw in the movie. I think that's the whole appeal of this genre.
This got me interested in film making (optical on-camera effects).
