Review of Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) by Markus K — 20 May 2010
Giant moth monster, Mothra, returns to Japan, and demands that the original Godzilla bones must be returned to the sea. As we remember, these bones are used as basic structure for anti-Godzilla robot, Kiriyu (MechaGodzilla). But then the new Godzilla returns, and Mothra and Kiriyu must fight him off.
This was better than first Millennium -era MechaG movie, but still felt kind of hollow. Visuals and effects are great as always, and action scenes are thrilling (I loved the dogfight between Mothra and jets), but to be honest, it's feeling old. Same formula has been used over and over again, and it's getting repetitive. Tokyo SOS is number 27 seven in Godzilla franchise, so no wonder. And like last Mechagodzilla movie, Godzilla seems to not have much of personality. Once again, he's just a big and mean monster, rising from the ocean to terrorize Japan. He can be so much more than that.
But Mothra is nice. And musical score is gold, again. I wish Michiru Oshima would have scored Final Wars.
And I must face it, even tough this has been seen many, many times, it's still very entertaining. Nice way to waste hour and half. But after that, you won't remember much.
