Review of Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) by Creeper3455 — 01 Jun 2019
Kudos,Warner Bros. You made me feel feelings in a movie (featuring weird-ass creatures) that isn’t a Pixar movie. But then again, the whole world cried at the death of a tinman in a bloated Superhero Movie. Eh,well….
Godzilla King Of The Monsters. Or as I’d like to call it “SHELVE OUT YOUR $50 AND SEE THIS THING IN THE BIGGEST IMAX SCREEN YOU COULD FIND”. This movie doesn’t even need a review, since there are simple things to talk about (not in a “I liked this movie because...Because!” sort of way),but who cares,I’m doing this for a passion,so let’s do this.
For starters, this the most obnoxious, cacophonic, absurd and flat-out bizarre thing I’ve seen at the movie theater so far this year. And for that reason,I love it so much. Writer/Director Michael Dougherty (writer of X2:X-Men United) and Zach Shields understand that this is such stupid material to be taken seriously in a movie of this caliber,so what they do with the Script is you may as well care about the next gargantuan Monster Battle (and not the human aspect) and call it a day,so that you can safely wait for the next round against King Kong next year.
That isn’t to say that the human aspect is boring and/or annoying. Sure, there’s one huge flaw with it,but overall, they were trying to make you feel something for them, even if there’s a Villain reminiscent of the ole’ Saturday Morning Cartoon fever. Once again,Ken Watanabe makes the exposition dump interesting to hear (whether it’s how many monsters there are in this Universe or Godzilla’s abilities etc.),Thomas Middleditch felt like he was in a different movie and there’s a part in here that, just like the rest of the 2hr12’ runtime, feels like what Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom miserably failed to accomplish (the “are you with this creature or do you wanna terminate the creature?” clichè) since Universal doesn’t know how to make movies anymore. (Pets 2 looks so bright, you guys).
As for the Monster Action, yes,it is beautiful and just what I expected: giant Monsters (full of gorgeous CG Splooj) wrecking buildings while brawling it out featuring an aesthetic so artistic, you may as well compare several shots to a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo. The Monsters can also be funny at times, mostly King Ghidorah (the main monster baddie),who has a severe problem with his other 2 heads,apparently...
Suprisingly,it’s also one of the most transcending IMAX 3D experiences of all time. It’s up there with Avatar and Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse.
This is also a huge breath of air not only for all the movies that aren’t John Wick or Booksmart playing in theaters right now,but also for a Personal Crisis of mine. This weekend has been really bad for me,to the point to where I was going to abandon Art forever (it’s a long story),so I have to thank this movie in a way. Its fully artistic (and sometimes foggy) aesthetic gave me hope for the future and my comic art style.
And again, this isn’t a Disney/Pixar movie in the veins of Cars and Finding Nemo, but how they made me feel emotions for a creature wrecking **** is,and will be,SO unquestionable.
However, there are flaws, and these kinda can’t be unforgiven?
Obviously,I wanted more big action. As we were walking out of the IMAX Screening,my brother was like “you can cut the human parts, and nothing changes, since, without that,it’s just big-ass monsters fighting”,and yeah,to a certain degree….
Also,I really really REALLY didn’t care for Vera Farmiga in this movie. Besides “she’s Madison’s (AKA Millie Bobby Brown giving it her all) Mom” and “she’s the one with the MacGuffin”,there’s really nothing to care about her,as she’s just used for the story like a random piece of a 50+ piece Jigsaw Puzzle.
But besides these flaws, when your favorite Movie of 2019 is a brawl between a Giant Radioactive Monster and a 3-headed Dragon (and not the new Jordan Peele movie or the new Marvel “3hrs of Fan Service” movie),there’s really something wrong with 2019. Granted,I haven’t seen Booksmart or Apollo 11,as they still didn’t come out here in Italy.
This is the one where I wanted the cheers and/or the applauses as the movie went by,especially for that 3rd Act,which makes the movie “More vengeful than Avengers Endgame” (I’m trademarking that just now,I SWEAR,if I don’t see this quote on the Blu-ray...).
Godzilla King Of The Monsters is so far the best movie of the year, and it’s a big Plot Twist for goddamn sure.
Also yeah,stay until the Credits.
