Review of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) by Barry E — 12 Jun 2007
The five star rating is really for the Japanese version but the US Raymond Burr version is quite good in its own right. The American version is the reason anyone even still knows who Godzilla is anymore and turned this artsy monster movie into an international sensation, not to mention starting one of the longest-running film franchises in history.
Still, nothing can top the original Japanese. It's amazing how dark and serious a giant monster movie can be and still be compelling and meaningful, even after 50 years. A true feat of sci-fi filmmaking, there will likely never be another movie quite like it.
