Review of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) by Luke J — 07 Aug 2007
Us vs. Godzilla. My five stars are granted to the original Japanese version, released in 1954, which does not have all those contrived American scenes with Raymond Burr yakking on a sound stage. Even so, both versions are worth watching, and this first Godzilla film is possibly the only one worth taking seriously.
It is both a commentary on the fear of atomic devastation, as well as a brilliant monster movie in its own right, and the first "suitmation" movie, which would continue to form an entire genre on its own (in Japan, anyhow).
