Review of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) by Jason D — 29 Mar 2008
Bastardized American version of the film about American nuclear weapons testing results on an evil greater than any atomic bomb as GODZILLA is created and unleashes a fury on Tokyo, Japan that becomes an 80 minute slap to the face of Americans for bringing such misery to these people during the second World War.
More than just a man in a rubber suit, the Godzilla films were a huge part of my childhood which I still really enjoy as an adult. Yes, I am a nerd, but it's not different than a love that people share with other things.
This movie is the start of a dynamic and incredible character in cinema that spans over 50 years. Love it. You'll find that for the first dozen or so Godzilla films, that there were two versions of each one: the Japanese and American versions.
Do yourself a favor and watch the longer, better structured Japanese versions rather than the bastardized American ones.
