Review of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! (1956) by Roland S — 21 Sep 2009
The first debut of the worlds most famous movie monster! (Well, the American debut, at least) Much more serious than the campy films which would later follow, but watching Raymond Burr's shoehorned scenes kind of negates that.
The Japanese version of the film was not just a big monster-destroying-city-fest (although it succeeds pretty well at that, too), but also a political commentary for the US atomic bombings at the end of World War II.
The American version obviously downplays that, turning the film into just a big monster-destroying-city-fest (which is just fine).
