Where are the positive reviews coming from? I've been watching movies for many, many years and I love a good sic-fil or monster movie. Accenting the word "good", this 2014 version of Godzilla.
This flick is neither good sic-fi nor a good monster movie. (1) Essentially plot-less with mediocre dialog. (2) The Mutos look ridiculous. Nasty, very large praying mantises. (3) Pretty awful acting.
I checked out the hero's bio and was shocked to find that he is not a graduate of a pre-school acting academy. His disturbed, vacant stares into the distance gave me that impression. (4) Turn some damn lights on! What are you hiding? Mediocre and unimaginative CGI? (5) Someone in Hollywood, please find the excellent David Strathairn (the Admiral) a job in the good movie he deserves.
I was frankly embarrassed for him.
