Review of Godzilla (2014) by Steven G — 08 Aug 2015
As a die hard Godzilla fan I must admit I was a little disappointed by the lack of actual Godzilla screen time, but Edwards did a great job paying homage to the original film with great teases and amazing suspense.
The Human drama is a little forced at times and let's be honest if Cranston hadn't been killed the story would have been a lot more enjoyable. However, none of it is awful by any means, just acceptable.
When the King of the Monsters does finally show himself about 30-45 minutes in, it is a spectacle to watch and got my blood pumping. While the limited action is great when it's there, Edwards does a few too many cuts from it and ends up infuriating the viewer.
He could have added at least 5 more minutes of footage and people would have been more satisfied. The creatures he fights are cool as well, and the final confrontation is definitely the high point of the film, even though getting there felt like it took a while.
Godzilla (2014) is by no means perfect, but it exceeded my expectations by a long shot and leaves me very excited for inevitable sequels that will follow.
