Review of Godzilla (2014) by Patrick K — 02 Jul 2015
Rating: 4.3/5.
Over the days since I saw this film, I have grown to love it. As a Godzilla fan(boy) for my entire life, I grew up with this hulking monster, and I have seen just about every Godzilla movie there is. In fact. this was my most anticipated movie of the year. That being said, I initially walked out of this movie merely liking it. I thought it was well-directed, well-acted. and featured phenomenal special effects, but from a fanboy standpoint, I just thought there wasn't enough Godzilla in the film, and to be honest, I still do feel that way. But over the last few days, and from talking to other people who have seen the film, I have grown to really appreciate what this film did and learned to love it. This movie follows the framework of Jaws or Alien, where you don't see the monsters much, so that when you do, you appreciate them that much more. Now, I will say that the film does drag at certain places, and that I would've loved to have seen more monster fighting, but again, those are fanboy concerns that I have just because I love Godzilla. As a movie fan, I appreciated the build-up and the payoff, which was spectacular. The last act of this movie is worth the price of admission. Overall, while the movie does have problems, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and look forward to seeing it at least once more before it leaves theaters.
