Review of Godzilla (2014) by Chris R — 06 Apr 2016
With the release of the new 'Star Wars: Rogue One' trailer, I thought I should review the director Gareth Edwards last film: 2014's 'Godzilla'. This is one of the better Godzilla films in a long while, although it comes with its share of flaws that hold it slightly back.
Godzilla's design is spot on, with a nice horror twist added to make him scary again. While the titular monster is on his game, I cannot say the same for the original designs known as MUTO's. These are some of the most bland and badly made monsters in cinema, with just a lack of imagination the Kaiju sub-genre is known for.
The other major flaw with this one is unfortunately most of its cast, with Bryan Cranston's excellent performance cut short before the halfway mark, leaving us with dull and boring characters that make you root for the monsters even more.
'Godzilla' 2014 may be another origin story to the monster that we probably didn't need, it's also one of the better in the series and the announcement of King Ghidorah and other classic monsters coming in the sequel, I give this one a recommendation.
