Review of Godzilla (1998) by Kai82 — 11 Aug 2020
They have taken the God out of Godzilla. It is so bad that Toho acquired the rights to this wannabe Godzilla renamed him Zilla and let the real Godzilla finish him off in under a minute in Godzilla Final Wars.
The main problem is that this movie is nothing special. The Japanese movies had their flaws but were really enjoyable. Even the hilarious bad ones were entertaining. Godzilla movies can always be or should be done in B-movie style.
No one expects a Shakespearean experience. Acting can be cheesy or really good and I will praise Bryan Cranston for the 2014 movie but Godzilla is always the main actor. I think the redesign looks O.K but why did they do it? Godzilla is one of the classic characters that should not have mayor changes because this does not work well and upsets the fans.
This is proven in many medias as comics, videogames and others did this before and it rarely if ever worked in this magnitude. Also he is pretty weak and easily dealt in Godzilla standards by the military in the movie.
That never happened before or after in any movie. The special effects are however adequate. Nothing bad or outstanding. The human actors are also O.K. but suffer from the script. There are some strange dialogues.
Bonus for Jean Reno who is one of my favorite actors (Recommended Leon The Professional, Wasabi and The Crimson Rivers). Overall while not that terible compared to other movies it was a disappointment.
I recommended the Japanese once or the newer American Godzilla movies instead.
