Review of Godzilla 1985 (1985) by Matt S — 03 Jul 2010
#16 - After a nine year absence, the Big G returns to the big screen in the first of the second generation of his films (The Heisei series). This one goes back to its roots, playing as a sequel to the original, as if the other films hadn't happened.
It's simply great. The special effects are much improved, there's much more sense of the devastation suffered by the populace and the commentary on the cold war, with Japan being caught between the USSR and USA flexing their military muscles, is very well done.
Some parts are genuinely scary too. I suspect its low opinion is because the US version was butchered, dubbed and stuffed with new inept scenes. Go original Japanese every time!
