Review of Godsend (2004) by Ray S — 12 May 2004
A married couple turns to a doctor who has developed a new cloning technology to replace their recently deceased 8 year old son, but when their son surpasses the age he died, things become horribly wrong!
I would not have seen this movie if my friend hadn't called me. I usually ignore bad reviews, but the reviews were so bad, that I decided I didn't want to see it, but when my friend called, I thought, "What the heck?! If it's bad, I'll be able to trash it on here!" But after I saw this movie, I was wondering one thing, "Why do I keep relying on critic's opinions?!" Critics are all the same, for the most part! They always look at how well-made a movie was instead of looking at how entertaining it was. This was why Godsend was received so horribly. Godsend has no original bone in his body! Without the cloning element, it gets all of its story from The Sixth Sense, The Omen, and What Lies Beneath (they have a bath scene straight out of that movie). Even with the lack of originality, Godsend was entertaining! I never found myself wondering how much longer the movie was going to be, or what time it was. I wasn't thinking of anything, except how fun it was.
I loved the director's choices in this film; he reminded me a lot of M. Night Shymalan in a way. Throughout the whole movie you would never see the villian completely. He'd show you just a little flash and that was it. There would also be these scenes where all you see is the "ghost's" hands and you wouldn't see anything else. The camera-work really made it chilling. The director would also have these great set-ups to a scene that would let you know what was going to happen and as the scene goes on, all you're doing is waiting. This made the movie much more chilling than it would have been otherwise.
Even though it was entertaining, the story was a complete copy of other films. This kid could see ghosts like the kid in The Sixth Sense, after awhile he becomes somewhat evil like the kid in The Omen, and there is a bath scene exactly like What Lies Beneath. The only thing original about this movie is the cloning element and that might have been taken from some movie I can't think of right now. Godsend takes parts of stories to make it its own and because of that, I can't give it a great rating, because great movies are original. So for me, Godsend was just a guilty pleasure! Like the director of Dawn of the Dead, I have high hopes for Nick Hamm as well. If he gets a well-written, original script, his next movie will be awesome!
Overall, Godsend was completely engaging, and highly entertaining, but it had a very unoriginal plot making Godsend just a guilty pleasure.
