Review of God's Own Country (2017) by Kanga B — 09 Jun 2018
OK I must admit that after being hit on a lot in my youth, when not asking for it, I am a bit homophobic and had a distaste for watching a gay film. I stumbled upon this movie and was completely taken by it authenticity, passion, love and beauty.
Josh O'Connor & Alec Sec?reanu are both outstanding shining lights of realism and owning the role such it looks like they are not acting they are just being! Alec deserved to win best actor in the British Independent Film Award for Best Actor but I guess that was a bit much to give to a Romanian actor in his first English speaking film so they gave it to Josh.
Don't get me wrong, Josh was fantastic, but Alec was even better. Kudos to director Francis Lee who insisted that the part of Gheorghe must be played by a Romanian and what a score in casting! I imagine Lee must claim some credit for their outstanding performances since these guys are both a little green but gave towering performances under his guidance.
