Review of Gods of Egypt (2016) by Shane S — 19 Jun 2016
Is this film bad? Of course it is, the trailer would have told you that much. You do not watch this film for its quality. It is an escapist guilty pleasure.
Gods of Egypt is a little better than most of these similar films. The plot is poor and makes little sense, but it does give us some fun moments dropping in its own flavor of famous Egyptian lore. Gerald Butler is actually pretty good at these types of roles and deserves some kudos. He keeps the film above cringe worthy. I cannot say the same for Geoffrey Rush, his Ra scenes were some cringe worthy moments in the film. The CGI is a good rush of fun action and there were some neat CGI monsters and fights.
The whole film is a passable piece of action and visuals. It is a bit of a fun journey at times. It was fun to see Anubis as something other than the main villain, and the Sphinx was interesting enough. You do have to look past the weak performances, terrible female characters and largely senseless final plot, which is possible if you go into this with the right mindset of escapism over quality. I am not sure I would be able to on a second viewing, but who would watch this twice?
