There's so much wrong with this movie. The arguments are broken, the characters are extreme and unbelievable, and even the presentation of a modern college campus is unrealistic.
Why didn't Josh just drop the class? Because that would've been too easy and sensible.
I mean, it was the first week of classes. It wouldn't even have showed up on his transcript.
Any counselor would have told him to just drop the class.
