Review of God's Not Dead (2014) by S J — 13 Aug 2014
This movie appeals to a specific group on a touchy subject, meaning that it is more than likely that all other groups will have a disturbingly negative predisposition to the entire premise of this movie. For those of us able to realize that this was still a movie, not an excuse for an IMDb debate forum, it was not bad, decent.
The acting was good at most points, with a couple big names highlighting the IMDb profile of this movie. The screenwriting was clever at times, despite the fact that the protagonist missed a perfect opportunity to quote Einstein (who also had an encounter with an arrogant atheist professor) regarding "evil".
For those of us who are capable of understanding that people with beards can be trusted for morals more than WorldstarHipHop, we can comprehend that the Robertson's show their true colors and patriotism as well as their undying faith in this movie, and that they actually fit perfectly well into it.
Unfortunately, the movie itself had some dry points. There was absolutely no comic relief in the entire movie. At no point was there even a remote opportunity to laugh. I would have also liked to see the characters come together at a much earlier point in the movie, so that the fabric could have been tightly sewn together before the plot began to intensify.
The movie is completely clouded in many people's minds because of aforementioned predispositions. The fact that a family was most likely a traditional Muslim family and the father beat his daughter for secretly being a Christian was almost a "bring it on" for the thought police to cry "racist" and other claims without any more emotional wounding than a paper cut and expecting the people who can see clearly to also want every antagonistic character to be a white person of every majority group so that no one is "offended".
In conclusion, this was a not-bad, satisfactory movie that failed in some aspects and will hardly ever get an unclouded or uncontroversial review.
P.S. To anyone saying that this is an implausible scenario:
If you would have taken a minute or two to stay for the end credits, you would have seen a number of similar cases clearly listed, and realized that this is based on true stories.
Additionally, to anyone who thought the line the professor says regarding using a lowercase "g" in "God" and mentioning extra credit for her was in any way a clever move by the professor, or thought that you could use it on your own, I would feel keen to point out to you that I certainly hope no college professor would be teaching to start sentences with a lowercase letter.
Despite the fact that this movie wasn't perfect, it was HIGHLY necessary.
Amen.
