Review of God's Not Dead 2 (2016) by Gray Z — 09 Aug 2017
God's Not Dead 2 is directed by Harold Cronk, and it stars Melissa Joan Hart, Jesse Metcalfe, and David A. R. White in a Christian courtroom drama about a teacher that answered a question to a student about a specific comparison from Ghandi and Jesus, and one of the students told people about it, which end up getting up to the higher ups that not only got her fired, but also take her to court about the school's situation of religion from the teacher.
When I finished the first God's Not Dead film, I knew that I can't stop there with Pure Flix films, especially with this that's out, and a third one on the way. So for this, I can say that in some aspects, this is better than the first one, but in other aspects, it's worse also.
The acting is a bit better as the main lead is good in it, which I didn't realize that this is the same actress that plays Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and it's got some talented actors like Ernie Hudson who's fitting as a judge, and Ray Wise as he was actually menacing as the villain in this film which he's basically one of the best parts of this film.
I got some chuckles out of David A. R. White's part as he's really clumsy in this, which he wasn't in the first one, and the quality in this is better than the first one that I can see this as actually a film, kind of.
As for the negatives, well, let's talk about that. When the teacher answered a question and got in trouble for it, they never seem to let her have the chance of her telling her side of the story, or even why she even answered the question, and just immediately assumed the worst for that situation, whether it being in the teacher's meeting, or in court.
Whenever they are trying to convince people about whether God exist or not, has barely anything to do with the teacher's situation, and it kept going for so long that I forgot about what the case was even about.
The blogger with the cancer is back, and she didn't have much purpose being in the film other then the fact that she needs the Newboys' help for religious reason, and end the plot point that it had in the first one, which is the only plot point from the first one that was completed as it didn't explain about what's going to happen to the Muslim woman who changed to Christian, or for Josh Wheaton's end.
It's very preachy like it usually does, and while it's not quite as offensive as the first one, there is some offensive moments that come from Asian parents. There are so many stuff in the court case that is so needlessly complicated that it could've been as simple as it get from the teacher, the person that texted everybody about it, which they didn't even show, and the student that asked the question about Jesus.
There were some shock values in the end that I already knew why it was going there, which it wasn't because of shock that all of the characters thought it was, and the ending is almost the same as the first one, which I have a feeling that it's going to be the same thing again in the third movie.
While we get so many sides from the teacher, I never understand why Ray Wise's character wants to go against the teacher, or why he wants to go against religion. God's Not Dead 2 is just as outrageous as the first one for the worst, and I can't wait to see where the third one goes, especially when seeing the after-credit scene of this film.
