Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by Morten H — 23 Jul 2007
This the grand example of a "small" film with a huge impact and imagination. It is a study of character, more to say the character of late filmmaker James Whale, who's last days, several decades after directing two of the Frankenstein movies, are depicted as a period of illness ultimately leading to his mysterious death in his own swimming pool.
Ian McKellen was made for the part of Mr. Whale, and he flatters the movie every second he is in front of the camera. Brendan Fraser also does remarkably well as Mr. Whale's young gardener. I'm a bit shocked that none of the actors won Oscars, only the screenplay, which is of course brilliant.
.. A movie you need to let sink in on you.
