Sir Ian McKellen is always terrific playing sassy old queens: "This studio was full of bare buttocks and pricks . . . mmm, hard, arrogant pricks!" Lynn Redgrave's pragmatic yet staunchly Catholic German housekeeper could be part of my extended family.
