Ian McKellan gives the performance of his life in this emotionally profound and distinctive film. Bill Condon's writing and direction are instinctive and lovely. Brendan Fraser defies the odds of logic and gives a intelligent, understated performance and Lynn Redgrave is excellent comic relief.

But it all comes back to McKellan who is shocking, pitiable, and never pathetic. A sublime look at a tortured soul.
