Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by Tommie M — 21 Sep 2007
Bill Condon's touching and honest dipiction of passions at the end of their rope and ultimately the enevatability of age chimes with truth, skillfully anchored by Ian McKellen's unflinching devotion to his role and Condon's quietly apt script and direction.
The dialogue snaps with its pangs of regret, making scenes with McKellen and Lynn Redgrave a joy, while Brendan Frasier gives a career best in a sutble and dignified role. This film certainly points to Kinseyfor Condon, but here's hoping he can go back to just an understated classic again.
