Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by Aaron T — 19 Dec 2007
Quite frankly, I'm surprised so many people like it so much. If not for the frank sexuality and widescreen cinematography, this could have easily been a made-for-TV movie. There are good moments, but that's about it.
There's nothing moving the film forward (it takes a special filmmaker to make conversation cinematic, and Condon is not that filmmaker), and after a while you begin to resent the heavy-handed flashbacks and find yourself withdrawn by the time that "big emotional scene" arrives.
The film is weak sauce.
