Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by James-Masaki R — 03 Nov 2010
I wanted to see it when it was released in theaters, then I bought the DVD and it sat on my DVD shelf for more than 5 years, and now I finally watched "Gods And Monsters", Bill Condon's excellent portrait of the last dasy of James Whale's life. The director of Frankenstein.
Ostracized from Hollywood, sitting at home in retirement, former director Whale, gay, depressed, lonely, and mentally losing it, finds an unlikely attraction, and some kind of friendship with his naive yet curious gardener. Once the gardener enters Whale's world, he finds that the friendship is evolving into something more dangerous and saddening that he had hoped for.
