Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by Louise D — 11 Nov 2010
To be honest this film was not my cup of tea. I can see why it's considered a classic but it was a little too tedious for me. Sir Ian McKellen gives a successful performance in this biopic of director James Whale.
The film focuses on the later years of the director's life and in particular his obsession with a simple gardener. Struggling with his heath and his sexually. He almost lives his life in a fantasy world from visions of Frankenstein's monster to flashback to his film sets.
What really did surprise me was the performance of Brendan Fraser as the said gardener. Wow! Why on earth does he churn out and star in so many turkeys when clearly jugging from this film he can do some serious acting.
I'm glad I have watched this but I will not be sitting through it again.
