Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by Cody M — 21 Mar 2012
Intriguing period drama that tells a fictionalized account of the later years of James Whale (Ian McKellen), who directed the icon Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein and now haunted by his memories of the Great War, who befriends a handsome young gardener (Brendan Fraser) and convinces him to pose for him.
While the gardener is at first suspicious of the intentions of the openly gay Whale, he soon comes to respect and be fascinated by the witty, complex older man, while unaware of the true reasons Whale has befriended him (and it is not what you think.
) Directed with tenderness by Bill Condon, McKellen is mesmerizing as great charismatic director, and Brendan Fraser is equally fine. Produced by Clive Barker.
