Review of Gods and Monsters (1998) by Al P — 21 May 2010
Forget Gandalf. Forget Magneto. Forget Sir Leigh Teabing. Ian Mckellen's role of a lifetime goes to that of legendary Hollywood director James Whale. McKellen positively sinks his teeth into the role with such grace and playfulness that it's his single best piece of acting.
Also, every once in a great while Brendan Fraser plays a role that reminds us that he can actually act, "Gods and Monsters" has one such role. Finishing out the trio of fantastic performances is Lynn Redgrave as Whale's longtime housekeeper.
Bill Condon's Oscar winning film is a fantastic look at the final days of one of horror's most influential directors and a man who ultimately stands among the monsters he has created.
