Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by Jim M — 17 Jan 2008
Gods and Generals serves as a biography of the devoutly religious General Thomas "Stonwall" Jackson and of the early days of the American Civil War in Virginia (depicting the First Battle of Bull Run, Fredricksburg and Chancellorsville).
Some excellent if melodramatic performaces by Stephen Lang as Jackson, Robert Duvall as Robert E. Lee, Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain. The film is decidedly pro Confederate, as such it glossess over slavery (which is kinda like saying the Holocaust wasn't that bad), I mean seriously the only two black people in this film have pro Confederate leanings.
The run time is also a problem, it would have been better to focus on Jackson or focus on the war not both. Despite its flaws though, if your a history buff you should fine some enjoyment (the films depiction of Fredricksburg is among one of the best battle scenes ever filmed, showing wave after wave of men being sent to their deaths).
If your into history check this out, if not your probably going to want to avoid this one, deifeintly not on par with its sequal Gettysburg.
