Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by Vincent H — 30 Aug 2008
I'm trying to figure out where to begin. Truly the bright shinning light of this movie is Stephen Lang who seems completely possessed by his role of General Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson... Everything else is just horrid.
There are so many things that are so damn awkward. The script, the acting the strange obsession with the music of the period.
Sub par editing, shoddy special effects and very uneven cinematography.
It also feel (and is, I checked) like the filming of a very long civil war re-enactment, proving once more that a fan in costume, however cool it is, does not substitute for an actor or an extra for that matter.
I would not subject myself to the rumored 6 hours director's cut if it was ever released.
This movie is a mess but you might like it if you're into civil war re-enactment with a heavy confederate slant.
