Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by John S — 10 Apr 2008
Another great american civil war film from the director of gettysburg. This film isn't quite as good as it seems to be trying to show too much of the war and because of this loses its focus. I think would have been a better film as a biopic of Stonewall Jackson and cut some of the union scenes especially those involving the 20th Maine who really only appear in this due to their large part in Gettysburg.
The battle scenes are excellent from a historical perspective despite being done in a very sanitised gore free way, I presume to get a PG-13 certificate. And the attack of the Irish Brigade at Fredericksburg where they face Cobbs Irish Regiment is a must see for any irish person interested in the history of the irish abroad.
