Review of God Help the Girl (2014) by T K — 08 Jan 2015
There is so much to tussle with when deciding if you like this or not. I am a huge Belle and Sebastian fan and so was eagerly waiting to see this as it is the lead singer/songwriters directorial debut.
The story behind the film is interesting as it started out when Murdoch auditioned for 3 female singers from the B&S fanbase and wrote an album as a side project for them to sing. There was a sort of storyline to the album but I doubt he expected it to be made into a film at the time.
The album was really good and relatively well recieved. He then appealed to the fanbase to help fund a movie and this is the result. It is full of good songs performed well by Emily Browning, unfortunately the same can't be said about the other two co-stars.
Hannah Murray simply can't sing so her songs are pretty funny to watch; at least this is my first impression but at the same time I think there may be a Nico like quality to her voice that could well grow on me.
I'll need to get the soundtrack to see. I was a little disappointed by the storyline as it is pretty weak but very typical of Murdochs view of the world which is about as indie as it could be. This has the potential to become a cult movie beyond the B&S fanbase as it is well directed, is very indie trendy fashion-wise, and has some very good songs in it.
