Review of God Bless America (2012) by Alexander Z — 24 Jul 2012
I so desperately want to love this film, but for all its bluster, violence, and indictment of the stupidest things in our culture, it feels like a one-dimensional analysis at best, and a lousy executioner's fantasy. Many people may even agree with the message in this film (though perhaps not so much the Puritanical parts), yet is removing certain people from the earth the solution to our problems? It won't fix a damn thing, really. It's the system of glorification that's flawed. The worst offenders are simply a symptom of that.
Goldthwait's last film, World's Greatest Dad, succeeded because it had depth. This one simply doesn't. However, it is still enjoyable to watch, directed well, and has likable characters. So give it a spin. Just don't expect to be blown away. There are better dark comedies out there.
