Review of God Bless America (2012) by Justin M — 08 Aug 2012
A darkly comic polemic against our banal consumer driven world where the lowest common denominators of our society decide what everyone is bombarded with.
In some ways it's quite extreme, but the film is most interesting when it shows restraint. It travels quite a ways down the rabbit hole while maintain logic we can at least partially identify with even when all the colors blur and absurdity is king. Some would probably argue it goes to far into it's extremes and other would argue it doesn't go far enough, but for myself, the even keel it keeps shows the heart of the picture. This isn't about crazy left or right wing politics, it's just about exhausted people wishing the world would just shut up and leave them in peace.
I doubt this film will every really be appreciated by a mass audience because of keeping that middle ground, and I think that is very unfortunate. If you don't mind harsh satire, this is a great choice of an underrated gem.
