Review of Go Tigers! (2001) by Jennifer T — 12 Jul 2008
As far as documentaries go, this one is just so-so. That said, anyone interested in football, or obscure commentary about Ohio should watch it.
Who says Texas is the kingdom of "Friday Night Lights?" After watching this, Ohio certainly ranks right up there. Of course, being from Ohio, I am a bit biased.
Anyway, a few mildly amusing points to this movie...
1. I did not know the Massillon - Canton McKinley game was the only high school football match handicapped by Vegas. I'd be curious to know whether that is still the case. Even so, says a lot about this game.
2. I loved it when the reverend was telling the team a story about a Jewish family on Passover. I'd love to meet the two Jewish families from Massillon. Better yet, I'd love to know whether any of these kids knew what a Jew was.
3. The director tries too hard to ties the importance of football into the need to vote for a school levy. Yes, football is that important to these poor people from Northeast Ohio. No, the levy did not pass simply because the football program gave these same people Hope.
Overall, a pretty pathetic commentary on life in small town America.
