Review of Gnomeo & Juliet (2011) by Natasha A — 25 Jan 2012
Saw this movie with the family and here was the range of reactions. Me: omigod this is adorable and hilarious. Mom: This is cute, I like the Elton John music. Erynn (16 year old sister): can the gnome in the speedo come out again? He was funny.
Claire (12 year old sister): I LOVE THIS MOVIE! Dad: zzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZzzZZzzzz (He literally fell asleep) As you can see, wide range of reactions here. But from my perspective, this was actually a very clever adaptation of the original Shakespeare tale, and they weren't afraid to make fun of the Bard either.
(A little gnome comes on in the beginning and says "Before we begin, I have to recite this terribly boring opening prologue... Two households, both alike in dignity...." and then he gets yanked of stage) The story is obviously predictable, but that doesn't take away from how fun it is.
The Elton John music is in there for really no reason, but it does make it a fun movie and more lighter. If you've never read Romeo and Juliet (which by the way, YOU'VE NEVER READ ROMEO AND JULIET?!?!?!) you'll actually be fine.
The plot is easy and simple to follow (obviously, if there were 6 year olds in the theater) But I believe you benefit more if you've read it, or as a matter of fact any of Shakespeare's plays.
If you're a lover of Shakespeare, there are endless references in the movie. Not only from Romeo and Juliet, but from other plays such as Hamlet and Macbeth, two of Shakespeare's other great tragedies.
There were times where I was the only one in the theater laughing, and it was because of a Shakespeare reference. The animation is adorable and well-done. Every clink and clank the gnomes make is accounted for.
Overall, very cute movie. go see it :).
