Review of Gnomeo & Juliet (2011) by James K — 27 Jul 2011
I am biased: I don't like this movie. It has a very limiting plot that disallows creativity even though it started very creatively. Garden gnomes playing out the stories of the greatest love story ever told in the setting of two adjoining gardens. Shakespearean Romeo and Juliet lived in the same city, fighting (instead of racing lawnmowers), partying, not guarding anything (instead of protecting a miniature wall and an oversized toilet bowl) but destroying public order, wreching havoc in the city all the same. Gnomeo's and Juliet's family feud is a much quieting ones as they need to stay gnome when people are watching (?!). It should have been hilarious but in order to stay true to the Shakespearean plot developement, it turns boring and predictable.
I mean, who thought Gnomeo and Juliet would actually die? I mean, didn't they get bulldozed over by this giant all-destroying lawnmower? I mean, they are in love for like a few days and now they have to die?
