Review of Glorious 39 (2009) by Kathryn E — 24 Nov 2009
I wonder how many years they will be using "his year's Atonement" on movie posters, tis getting a bit silly now and so far nothing has lived up to that! The only thing that could link this to Atonement was the casting of Romola Garai and Juno Temple, that's where the similarity ended really.
Glorious 39 was a film that nearly passed me by, I happened to spot a poster on the tube a few weeks ago, watched the trailer, realised I had to see it and then got conned into parting with £14 to see it at the Odeon West End, the only cinema in the whole of London showing it. SORT IT OUT CINEWORLD!
Was a bit worried it'd be a wasted effort and was desperately hoping my £14 and treck into the West End on a wet Sunday afternoon would be worth it! Luckily it was! Bit of a daft storyline (but isn't that what the movies is all about?) and ignoring that Glorious was erm .... glorious! It kept me hooked the whole way through, made me cry, gave me a huge LOVE for Romola and her gorgeous dresses and was really beautiful.
Really loved the opening shots of the film with the golden Autumnal colours and AH HA is that Norfolk I spot! I immediately recognised the landscape, got a little homesick and really appreciated what a beautiful county it is. Glorious was filmed on location in Great Yarmouth, Holkham, Melton Constable and Gresham and what a perfect setting it was. LOVED when Anne took to the Norfolk roads and had an argument with a tractor "BLOODY FARMERS" tee hee!
The acting was fantastic, although I do wish Juno would stop playing such irritating characters! Anne was my favourite, loved her melt down near the end when she became a gypsy and lost the airs and graces as she escaped the clutches of her family.
Didn't like the scenes with the cats very much, couldn't even get sad about Lawrence because I was too busy being traumatised by the dead cats in bags :(.
