Review of Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) by Sarfaraz A — 22 Dec 2013
Glengarry Glen Ross directed by James Foley - from the Pulitzer Prize winning play of the same by adapted by David Mamet. Starring AL PACINO, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey. Film was premiered at Venice Film Festival, where Jack Lemmon received Volpi Cup award for Best Actor. Made with the budget of just $12.5 million - Al Pacino received Best Supporting Actor nominations at two different prestigious Academy Award, and Golden Globe.
On a rainy-day events occur inside the office of real-estate -occupied by salesmen Jack Lemmon, Alan Arkin, Ed Harris, and upper-heads Kevin Spacey and AL PACINO. Kevin Spacey is the manager who runs the affair and makes sure to implement commands. Kevin also has to deal with worsening scenario after visiting downtown hotshot slick Alec Baldwin warns them (rather in threatening manner) to reach target of property-sale in time or else lose their job. Alec hands packet of leads (names of sure-purchasing-parties) to Kevin and for Pacino (not present in the screen, yet).
It is said, that movie was made just like stage-drama, even actors who were yet to appear in scene, voluntarily showed up during other actors' performances. The movie is famous for bringing on stage versatile actors of their times, all together - and important thing is that the movie contains powerful dialogues, from those who are quite experienced at doing so. Of all, only Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon appear to have honestly dedicated to bring justification to film's crucial subject. To me, Al Pacino's performance at near climax shook me up, during Pacino's confrontation with Kevin, taking marvelous use of dialogue-delivery and pace of timing.
Oliver Stone's Wall-Street, like films introduced us to greed at top-level, and here we are seeing the ground-realities as suffered by ordinary fellas - neither of who are immunized to plague of deception and greed.
