Review of Glen or Glenda (1953) by Clarissa C — 03 May 2008
Another film by the infamous worst director of all time. Glen or Glenda has many of the trademarks that Ed Wood became known for, random stock footage during intense scenes, editing incontinuity, plot gaps, over the top dialogue and acting.
But don't let those small details deter you from seeing this film. While it isn't as hilarious as Plan 9 or some of his other cult favorites, Glen or Glenda is a movie that all Wood fans should see.
A story about transvestism today wouldn't really be a big deal, but this was back in the 1950's during the heyday of McCarthyism. This film was in many ways ahead of it's time, but unfortunately the "mistakes" in it, have prevented many people from taking it seriously.
This movie does has many laughable errors, but the fact that it was so personal to Ed Wood really makes me unable to poke fun at it. I really do respect this film, for the reason aforementioned and for the message of tolerance that it showed.
I only hope people can look past its errors and see the big picture, to understand and appreciate this message.
