Review of Glass (2019) by Lauren A — 18 Jan 2019
I think the problem with M. Knight Shyamalan's movies is that the viewers go in expecting one thing, and end up getting something completely different from that expectation. So, the fault lies not in the director, or the film itself, but in what the viewer wants out of a film.
That said, the audience got it right on this one, and the critics are out to lunch. What I love about Shyamalan is his ability to have a slow creeping tension throughout the film that keeps you waiting with baited breath.
The action is more cerebral and beneath the surface, as in The Village, and we get to spend a lot of time with the characters simply as vulnerable people who happen to have extraordinary abilities. James McAvoy is breathtakingly brilliant in his performance, and though Willis and Jackson do seem to take a back seat to his scene-shredding luminance, all three perform their parts well.
While the ending did leave me with discomfort and a sense of dissatisfaction, it's only because I didn't get the ending I wanted, and not because it isn't a fitting ending. It is a well-done and highly entertaining finish to the trilogy, and I'm sorry to hear there won't be more.
