Review of Glass (2019) by Joseph D — 22 Jan 2019
In case of emergency...well...you know the rest.
GLASS.
M. Night Shyamalan's career as a film maker has been...tumultuous...but the Unbreakable franchise has been a consist an high point. And this 3rd installment is no exception.
Just over 2 hours, we start with a small intro, for those who came late to the party, & then we get right to the action. The plot moves at a good pace, slowly but steadily building to a bittersweet but satisfying payoff.
The casts of both previous films once again knock it outta the park. James McAvoy truly is a modern man of a thousand faces, each personality he displays is distinct & different, even if we only see them for one scene, he put real effort into them all. Sam Jackson once again proves he's both a master at playing both hero & villain, his take on an unhinged genius inspires fear, pity, & a bit of admiration at the end. Bruce Willis & Anya Taylor Joy as the reluctant heroes may come off as a bit stif, but to me, it seemed like they were already weighed down by their emotions so much, they had to keep them in check, they adopted a stoicism some heroes tend to have. But there were flashes here & there that reminded us that while super, they were still very human. Sarah Paulson always seems on the verge of tears, she's like a human Droopy Dog, I guess that's why her characters are so compelling, she's painfully human, & acts the heck outta her roles & this one was no exception. The rest of the cast did great, adding to the overall story in small but relevant ways. Everyone here just really did a great job.
The music was somber, but subtle. It had a quiet epicness befitting a superhero story grounded it reality.
Overall, I think Glass wraps up the Unbreakable trilogy in a way that says THIS story is complete, but ALL the stories are yet to be told. 4 stars out've 5, I think this proves once & for all that Bruce Willis IS a superhero!
