Review of Gladiatress (2004) by Ben W — 20 May 2009
The title Gladiatress is a huge mis-nomer - there are no gladiatresses in this film, and the comparison to Gladiator does the film no favours - It is a comedy and not a drama after all.
That said, the three Smack The Pony girls are the stars of the film and carry it off pretty well. Its a gentle comedy, with some understated visual and spoken gags - the names of the main characters Dwyfuc, Worthaboutapig etc are worth a smile, but not really made enough of.
There are some interesting supporting roles from such as Mark Benton and Ronan Vibert, and even more amazingly no turn from Kevin Eldon ;).
If you liked Smack the Pony, Chelmsford 1,2,3 or perhaps Monty Python and the Holy Grail, you may well enjoy this film.
Its not brilliant, but it is British humour, and has done pretty well to create a relatively accurate looking film with a low budget. Some of the jokes are funny, some pass you by if you aren't giving it huge attention, but its certainly a fairly enjoyable way to pass an hour and a half if you haven't got anything better to do.
