Joaquin Phoenix gives an admirable performance, as do Russell Crowe and Oliver Reed, but clumsy camerawork, poor editing, a weak script and and an excessive run time mean that Gladiator fails to aspire to more than an above-average sword and sandal film.
And it fails to impress that much on those grounds.
